This Month in Social Media: October 2016

So, what happened in social this month? ....

Facebook hopes to extend 'free' Internet program to the US

I suspect 'Win a Nobel Prize' may be on Mark Zuckerberg's bucket list.

In his most recent quest for humanitarian victory, Zuckerberg hopes to bring his Free Basics program home. The program, in partnership with network providers, offers complimentary (but limited) internet access to low-income and underserved communities unable to afford connections on their own.

Free Basics is already available in 49 countries, but Facebook will need to tread lightly in the United States to avoid regulatory scrutiny that effectively killed a version of the app in India earlier this year.

Also from Facebook this month: 'Marketplace' launches

Has anyone talked to Craig lately? He may be pretty perturbed by Facebook.

This month, the social media giant unveiled its newest community engagement tool, Marketplace. The new feature allows users to buy and sell items locally. Although Facebook will not facilitate the payment or delivery of items (just like Craigslist), the new initiative will further encourage users to engage with the app on a consistent basis.

Unsurprisingly, there's been some umm.... odd items 'for sale'. Laugh at few of them -- including 'my soul'-- here.

Twitter Live: A force to be reckoned with!

Have you been following the 2016 presidential election? *uses strongest satirical tone imaginable*

This election's polarizing nature has infected every facet of media (and life, if we're being honest). Social media is no exception. Twitter's newest push to shift from social network to legitimate news company has gotten even more traction with the live streaming of every October presidential debate netting over 3 MILLION live streams per debate.

Recently, Twitter also secured streaming agreements with the 'Big Four' major US sports leagues: NFL, MLB, the NHL, the NBA.

It's not hard to believe social media live streaming viewership may surpass broadcast networks in the very near future. Twitter may have found the redemption its been looking for.

What's the latest viral social media campaign equation? Comedic relief + millennial influencer. The White House did just that with the release of their newest PSA, centered around Vice President Joe Biden's #ItsOnUs campaign against sexual assault across college campuses. Although a pretty serious subject matter, teaming up with Funny or Die and social media favorite Adam Devine, the #ItsOnUs campaign sends an important message disguised in a playful social media-friendly tone.

Snapchat Spectacles

You know that annoying friend who pulls out their phone to Snapchat EVERYTHING? Your friendship may find some reprieve with the announcement of Snapchat Glasses.

The $130 specs (available this fall) will allow users to snap POV 10-second memories with a press of a button. No more obvious phone snapping....a personal pet peeve of mine.

(This may have been useful for my friend who lost her iPhone in the Atlantic Ocean attempting to Snapchat while jet skiing in Miami....on her birthday.)

Until next month!!
